Sculpture for Dev Harlan


We are currently fabricating a sculpture for the artist Dev Harlan. The sculpture consists of three large panels made of folded and welded aluminum plate finished in matte white paint. The geometric forms will hang on a wall and serve as a surface for 3D projection mapped video created by the artist.  More of Dev’s work can be seen here:

Surface to Air Bunker

Situ Studio has recently completed the fabrication of a sculptural centerpiece for Surface to Air’s New York retail store. Working with Surface to Air designers, the multi-tiered display was modeled after World War II bunkers. Concrete casting was done in collaboration with Oso Industries.

45 Park Lane Façade Art Panels

Situ Studio collaborated with The Office of Thierry W. Despont on façade panels for 45 Park Lane, Dorchester Collection’s ninth hotel. Located in Mayfair, west London, the nine-floor luxury hotel faces Hyde Park with panoramic views across London.

The undulating metallic panels mounted to the balconies overlooking Hyde Park create a rippled metallic surface which flows from the top of the building to its base, reflecting sunlight and embedding lighting across the façade. Situ Studio worked with OTD to develop the geometry, materials and fabrication system for the 24 unique panels. The CNC-milled foam was coated in a polyurethane resin hardcoat and finished in a custom LuminOre Nickle/Silver alloy to create the metallic effect without the weight of solid metal or the costs associated with repoussé. Working with the architects, project engineers and LuminOre to develop the custom panel and mounting system within the target budget, Situ Studio provided design development, fabrication consultation and construction administration services. The hotel will open in September of 2011.

Anton Ginzburg, At the Back of the North Wind

Situ Studio assisted the artist Anton Ginzburg in the fabrication of several sculptural components comprising his solo show entitled At the Back of the North Wind, currently on view at the 2011 Venice Biennale.

A major film installation, the central narrative force for the exhibition, serves as a poetic and evocative record of an expedition to “map the void” and search for the mythological land of Hyperborea. The exhibition also includes photographs and paintings, as well as eight relief sculptures–five of which represent the terrain of important sites for the project, abstracted and modified from maps and geographical data.

One of the main elements in the show is a sculpture that stands over 14 feet tall in the main hall of the Palazzo Bollani. 3D micro-CT scans of human bone previously used in a Situ Studio research were re-purposed, modified, and juxtaposed with actual fragments of mammoth tusks to create the sinuous Ashnest. The core’s high density foam was milled on a 4-axis CNC router and reinforced by internal steel pins for strength and precise assembly. The painted foam segments are supported on metal posts that rise out of a gravel, ash and tar pit.

4-Axis Capability

Situ Studio has added a 4th axis to our in-house CNC router for rotary milling.

Atwood Sculpture

Situ Studio has recently worked with artist Sebastien Leon Agneessens on producing a sculpture piece for B Brian Atwood’s New York showroom. The sculpture consists of 174 hexagonal, polished aluminum tiles which form a 30 ft. long serpent-like figure. To fix each individual tile in a precise location and angle, Situ Studio designed a plywood armature that supported threaded rods with swivel fittings. The positions and lengths of the threaded rod as well as the angle of the swivels were all coordinated so that the complex, tesselated form could rise from a simplified plywood armature.

Grasshopper was utilized to generate a 3D model and manage all of the CNC fabrication data. The plywood armature and 174 aluminum tiles were numbered and nested onto cutsheets and a schedule of corresponding rod lengths was produced. The entire project took three weeks from start to finish.

Notched Dichroic

The third iteration in a series of sculptures for the artist Alyson Shotz, a warped tubular form is created by interlocking pieces of laser-cut dichroic acrylic. In the development of this series, Shotz consulted with Situ Studio to create a custom Grasshopper script and fabrication method that could be applied to a variety of geometries. Beginning with a NURBS surface, the GH definition controls a series of different cutting planes that are used to generate notched and numbered parts for laser-cutting. Adding to their complexity, the artist’s choice of material creates multiple, unpredictable senses of form. Read more about Shotz’s work in dichroic acrylic here.

We have recently been working with the artist Sarah Oppenheimer in the development of a scoring and perforating system for folding aluminum honeycomb sheets. The research and development phase included testing a variety of honeycomb type materials and CNC milling techniques. The results have lead to a system where the direction and angle of each fold is precisely prescribed by the width of the score/perforation. The milled aluminum sheets ship flat and are folded in situ to become the finished sculpture.

Folding Plywood – 3

The American-Scandinavian Foundation presents the work of more than 35 designers and artists in Nordic Models + Common Ground, an exhibition that explores innovation in art and design facilitated by open artistic and cultural exchange. Designed by Snøhetta and Situ Studio and debuting in New York on October 29, the exhibition will unfold and travel.

Folding Plywood – 2

After a three month long design phase with Snøhetta we have begun production of the 12 folding display units. The traveling exhibition titled “Nordic Model + Common Ground” is hosted by The American Scandinavian Foundation and will debut at the Scandinavia House on the 28th of October.
