Mamaroneck Gateway

MTA Arts for Transit

Mamaroneck Gateway proposes a new public space for the town of Mamaroneck, one that is a visible and recognizable symbol of the town that forms a new entryway to greet commuters and visitors upon their arrival.

Celebrating the Mamaroneck station -- which was so significant in producing the diverse, multi-cultural community that the town is today -- the new public space is created by repurposed steel rails that appear to lift up from the ground forming archways amid a landscaped plaza of railroad ties and plantings. Not only visible from passing trains and the two station platforms, the Mamaroneck Gateway can be seen from ground level and shared visually by either side of town. At night, the sculpture becomes a glowing beacon on a hill welcoming visitors to the complex and interwoven community that is Mamaroneck.
